Archdiocesan Annual Appeal (AAA)

Get Your Commitment On!

This Sunday is Commitment Sunday for our 2021 Archdiocesan Annual Appeal.  This annual tax supports centralized services at the chancery and broad-based archdiocesan ministries throughout the three counties of San Mateo, San Francisco and Marin.  To put it quite simply, Saint Matthew’s Parish, School and individual families would not have weathered the dire consequences of this pandemic so well without the organizational and ministerial support of archdiocesan services, which you sustained with your AAA commitments in recent years.

In past years, this has been a powerful and visible experience of commitment on the part of numerous households in our community.  In response to the word of God proclaimed in the scriptures and homily, members of each household came forward to place their response at the altar, after having spent a moment in prayer, deciding how much to commit – even if that commitment was “zero.” That amazing witness may not be so powerful this year given smaller congregations.  However, our parish connections and personal commitments to Saint Matthew’s remain strong.  Just look at your extraordinary outreach to those struggling with the housing and food crisis, your ongoing support of the parish in weekly giving and the way in which you fulfilled last year’s pledges – even in pandemic.

Please make an extra effort to pray about it this year.  As I say every Commitment Sunday, I do not mean this to a be a gimmick or manipulation. There are many good reasons to give and there are many good reasons not to give.  More than reaching our goal, my desire as your pastor is that you use this to nurture your relationship with God, as in all things, with prayer.  As Matthew Kelly wrote in the little book we gave you for Christmas and as he said earlier this week in his BEST LENT EVER reflection, the simplest form of prayer is to ask, “God, what do YOU think I should do?”  That you might have this kind of personal relationship with God is what I committed my life to in the priesthood.

What commitment does God ask of you on this Commitment Sunday?  Ask him. That’s the only way to know.

Thanks in advance for your participation.

Our goal is $135,000.
